I talk to nonprofit leaders every week who tell me the same thing: “We know we should be applying for more grants, but we just can’t seem to get ahead of it.”
I get it. You’re stretched thin, the to-do list never ends, and grant writing keeps sliding to next week. But after raising more than $125 million, I can tell you — the problem usually isn’t motivation. It’s readiness.
Before you start your next application, answer these five questions:
You don’t have to figure out grants alone.
With over $125 million in grants won, we know what funders are looking for. Our system lets you manage the grant writing process in less than 2 hours per month so you can focus on your mission, not your proposals. A free call takes 15 minutes and will show you exactly where to start.

Funders don’t read long mission statements. They scan for clarity and evidence. If your 990 says one thing and your website says another, that’s a red flag that costs you before a reviewer even gets to page two.
- Do you have current financials ready to send today?
Funders will ask for your most recent 990, audit, and operating budget. If those documents are outdated or messy, you’re not ready.
- Can you name 15 foundations that are a realistic fit for your programs?
If you’re applying to every grant you stumble across, you’re burning time. A solid funder pipeline has 15-30 targeted prospects (not a random pile of options).
- Do you measure outcomes? (That’s different from an output…)
“We served 500 people” is an output. “85% of participants reported reduced symptoms after 6 months” is an outcome. Funders look for specific outcomes.
- Does your team have the capacity to manage a grant if you win one?
Winning is just the beginning. Reporting, tracking, and compliance take real hours. If your staff is already maxed out, a new grant could break them instead of building them up.
If you answered “no” to more than two of those, you’ve got work to do before your next application. And that’s okay. That’s exactly why I wrote this:Â
